Fun Times!!!

On Saturday, for the first time, Ashlyn, Brinley, and I went to the children's workship at Home Depot.  Ashlyn made a bug (she calls it a ladybug) house.  She did such a great job!

Twinners!!!!

My favorite time of day is probably the morning when we get to play.  I enjoy watching the girls
play so well together.

Ashlyn finally finished this week her sticker book that she got from Grandma Martinson from Christmas!
She loved doing it!

I had a primary presidency meeting and because of mixed up scheduling, we met at McDonalds.  The kids had so much fun.  Brinley discovered her passion in slides recently.  But check out her feet!  Gross!  We definitely went home and took a bath after having so much fun!

Brinley could totally walk all by herself, but she is so terrified.  Her accomplishment right now is standing up on her own and clapping whenever she does.  I am hoping that by the time we come out to Utah she will be walking on her own... we will see.  Only 5 days left!!! YEAH!!!!!

Hopefully you all got your cards and found out that we are having another girl!  We are so excited!!!

For Primary we are having a Sunday Sundae Party and with every article of faith that a child memorizes, they get a topping on their sundae!  The kids are so excited that they can earn up to 13 toppings!!! Yum!  So I made to bulletin board and it turned out pretty cute.  Going back into my teacher mode of fun bulletin boards!

The Spirit of Elijah

Today in primary, the sharing time was about Family History.  My desire to do family history has been on and off, but the lesson really hit me today.  When Minnie came out, we went to the Winter Quarters Visitor Center and the sister missionary asked us if we have any pioneer stories.  Well today when I came home from church after filling the family's tummies, I looked on Familysearch and discovered this story about John Ellison Maxfield (my 6th generation ancestor).  I feel like my testimony of the pioneers has grown so much living here in the Winter Quarters area, visiting Nauvoo, and learning the many stories of these wonderful pioneers.  I think as a mother, my perspective has changed about the hardships and sacrifices of these courageous men and women and I'm indebt to them (and their posterity) for the many sacrifices that they made to give me to opportunity to have the gospel in my life.
So I wanted to share this story of John Ellison Maxfield for my family members that may not know of a conversion story in our family.  I feel a connection to him because he spent a little time in Winter Quarters.

John Ellison Maxfield was born at Youton, Yorkshire, England, in the Parish of Alne, March 21st 1801. John was the sixth of eleven children born to John Maxfield and Hannah Appleton. His middle name, Ellison, was a namesake of one of his uncles. About 1818 John, together with his parents and several siblings, set sail from Hull, Yorkshire, England, bound for Australia. The ship in which they were sailing wrecked at sea. A passing freighter rescued the passengers and brought them to Canada. The Maxfields settled in Prince Edward Island, Canada. John Ellison married Sarah Elizabeth Baker on March 26th 1827. They were the parents of eleven children, including my great, great grandfather, Richard Dunwell Maxfield. Sarah was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada in May 10, 1811, to Jesse Baker and Sarah Shureman. John and Sarah had ten children born to them in Canada. Their names are Robert Quorton, Richard Dunwell, Elijah Hiett, Jesse, James Appleton, William Wellener, John Ellis, Sarah Elizaeth, Joseph Smith and Quincy Benjamin. About the year 1844, two Mormon Elders from Nova Scotia came to PEI where they baptized fifteen people. John Ellison and probably other members of the families attended a meeting at which these two Elders spoke. The tradition is that upon his return home, John called his family around him and said "I have just heard what I have been looking for all my life," and expressed a desire to join the church and go to Salt Lake Valley. They were baptized, along with some members of Richard's and Williams' families. John and Elizabeth owned a sawmill, engaged in ship building, owned a six hundred acre farm, and also raised thoroughbred horses. The families had planned to build a ship in which to sail to Chicago (Fort Deerborn at that time), but instead chartered a ship and left Prince Edward Island in June, 1850. John and Elizabeth left their large farm unsold with instructions to their attorney to sell it and forward them the money. They never heard from their attorney again. The rest of the property was disposed of with the exception of a horse. The morning they were to sail, the horse was brought around to the front of the Inn and John asked for a bid. He got the highest bid from a minister who bought it. They arrived in Chicago by sailing up the St. Lawrence River as far as they could go, then up one of the smaller rivers to the Great Lakes. They then sailed across Lake Michigan to Chicago. They would have had to travel overland from Chicago to Council Bluffs, being ferried across the Mississippi River on their way. The family reached Council Bluffs, at that time known as on July 9th 1850 and must have decided to cross the Missouri River and go over to Winter Quarters that same day. Jesse, their fifteen year old son, was drowned in the river as they were being ferried across. He had been sent to get something for his baby brother who was sick; he slipped off a plank into the swift running water and was never seen again. Jesse's year-old baby brother, Benjamin, died a few days later on July 15th 1850. Sarah was heartsick. The family arrived in Winter Quarters three weeks after the last company of Saints had left for the valley and were advised to stay there until spring. In the meantime, they prepared for the rest of their journey by purchasing food, oxen, cows, wagons and horses. One month after their arrival in Council Bluffs they were saddened by the death of their uncle and brother, William Maxfield, who left a widow and five small children. According to family tradition, John and Elizabeth brought with them a can of gold pieces; this they used in outfitting their family for the journey and were able to assist some of the less fortunate Saints. Sarah had brought with her exquisite laces, dimities, etc. that she had purchased in Canada to be made into baby clothing and other items when they reached their destination. John and Sara left council Bluffs with their eight children and a nephew, John Ellis Maxfield, a 15 year old son of Richard Maxfield and Eliza J. Parrot, on May 1, 1851. Sara Ann Picket, widow of William, and her five children remained in Council Bluffs, as did Richard and Eliza and the rest of their family. There was sickness in the family at the time and Richard and his thirteen

Children's Museum

Every time we go to the Children's Museum, it is a must to climb in the "O"
and here the chimes go off.
Don't you love how Ashlyn is wearing a skirt, but she also is wearing a tutu under her skirt!  This girl loves her skirts and dresses.  She is a girly girl!  Love it!

The museum just opened up two new sections of the museum.  This one is a hospital for babies.
Ashlyn loves playing doctor!  Brinley is really into giving baby dolls hugs and kisses.

This girl has the cutest eyes.  Her eyes are even smiling in this picture!

Every couple of months, the top level changes their theme.  Dinosaurs just barely opened and the girls were so excited to see all the dinosaurs and dig for the bones.

Next to the baby hospital, the bank is the other section that is new!  Ashlyn loved telling me how much money I could get from the bank.  She even enjoyed telling me to "Get in the line". This girl has a big imagination and loves playing pretend.  Her favorite game at home right now is Ashlyn is Mommy and Mommy is Ashlyn.  My favorite is when Derek gets home because I get a break from the game (she loves to play reverse roles throughout the day) and Ashlyn is the Mom and Derek is the Kid.  ("Ok Kid, pick up the toys.")
Derek and I better teach her how to use her money wisely because this girl is already a shopper.  Whenever we go to the store is wants EVERYTHING and says, "Mom, look how darling!"

This is a HUGE ugly doll that the kids love to climb on!

Brinley loves the water and everything in the water!  She loves to put everything into her mouth!

At the science show we learned about bubbles.  3, 2, 1, BUBBLES!!!

Fun in the Summer!!!

In the mornings we will go for our morning walk and then on special days (meaning when it is not so hot or humid) after our usual stroll, we will go to the local elementary school and play.  The girls' favorite is the slide, especially Brinley.  She will giggle so much and she loves sliding while holding Ashlyn's hand.

On Thursday, it was 80 degree at 8:00 in the morning.
Ashlyn was so excited because the girls were both wearing doggy jammies!

One morning we found a squirrel has gotten into our bird food so we decided to make some bird feeders and hanging them up int he tree for all the wonderful birds to eat.

Ashlyn's favorite hairdo is to do nothing at all, but put a headband in.  So we started a rule this week that she must get her hair done at least 5 days a week.  That means that I will have to do my research and youtube knowledge to look up cute hairdos for little girls.  So if anyone has a great idea for beginners, I would appreciate it!

We went to the splash pad this week with all our neighborhood friends!  The girls had a blast! They got lots of sun, laughter, and even some cool new sunglasses!  Brinley loves to look cool!

My two cute girls!

Ashlyn was invited to her best friend Hailey's house for a Frozen Party!
This is my adorable Elsa!  She is wearing an Elsa dress and we looked on youtube on how to do Elsa hair.

A week with the best Aunt Minnie!!!

We are so glad that Minnie was able to spend so much time with us.  She is such a wonderful sister and aunt to my girls.  Ashlyn didn't even want to play with her friends (which is a big deal) because she wanted to spend all her time with
Minnie.  We had a blast!  Thanks for coming out Min!!!

Before Minnie came to our house for the week, Ashlyn and I made a map of the
places we wanted to go during her visit.  We had five places: sand in the city, children's museum, splash pad, zoo, and the forest.  We completed all five and Ashlyn was able to put an X through each place on her map!  Now she loves to draw maps while we are driving in the car.

Ashlyn had so much fun with Minnie at the splash pad.  She couldn't stop giggling and laughing with Minnie!  This was the most fun that she has had at the splash pad!!!

The girls (or should I say Daddy) got a new toy called Magformers.  They love it and can spend hours playing with them building balls, rockets, houses, and even fishes (daddy).  I think Derek likes these toys even more than the girls.

Brinley loves playing peek-a-boo.

We had a such a fun day playing at the zoo!  One little monkey swing from the tree!

Minnie and Ashlyn took an adventure in the Jungle.

We found out a little secret about Minnie, she is terrified of .... butterflies!  (Sorry Minnie I had to post it).  But Ashlyn is the opposite.  They have this building that is an indoor butterfly building and we were walking the path inside and Ashlyn saw a butterfly and laid down on the path to watch and observe every move it made.  She was so fascinated by it!

Minnie's favorite part was the walk in tunnel of the Aquarium with sharks,
stringrays, seaurtles, and many fish.

Dino Dig

For FHE we went to the Winter Quarters Visitor Center.  We had the cutest sister missionary give us a tour.  It was fun to learn more about the early saints and how much we have to be grateful for because of the sacrifices that they made.

We also went to the children's museum and had a dance party with Princess Rose.  Ashlyn was in heaven singing Disney Songs and dancing with her favorite princess.

Apple Farm with the Van De Graaffs

While the Daddies studied on Saturday, we took a day trip to Nebraska City (about an hour from Omaha) with our great neighbors.  We went on to an Apple Farm and enjoyed many adventures!

 Ashlyn loves water pumps.

Brinley's new favorite game (Mommy's least favorite especially when it comes to meal time) is throw the object on the ground.

 The sound of music.

Ashlyn and her best friend Hailey found a bird's nest.

How grateful we are for our ears, but one thing that I am grateful for is the gift of selective hearing.  One day Ashlyn might master this skill when she becomes a mom.

Look what we found!  Bird Footprints!

Our little explorer with binoculars.

Ashlyn was so brave, she did the zipline really quick and fast so the alligators wouldn't get her (love her imagination).  Then mom took a turn too.  We had lots of fun trying to keep our balance on the rope.

Love my two little spiders!!!

I made a hammock for Ashlyn to play in and then she played "Mommy and Kid" with Hailey.  One person is the mom who puts the kid to sleep.  It is hilarious to see how she imitates Derek and I.
